  • Linguistic translation matrix developed to allow for language- and even syntax-independent conceptual storage, translation (ENT: "Through a Mirror, Darkly"; Star Trek: The Motion Picture; TNG Short Story: "Friends with the Sparrows")
  • Invented by Hoshi Sato in late-2160s (ENT: "Through a Mirror, Darkly")
    • Developed from early efforts in providing communication with Antianna (ENT Novel: Rosetta; TNG Short Story: "Friends with the Sparrows")
  • Fundamental component of both universal translator and VI interfaces in Federation technology
    • Presumptive extrapolation from presentation of infiltrated computer system in "The Haunting of Deck Twelve"
      • Shown to require involvement of communications system to clarify, but fundamental communication began prior to that point
  • Allows for abstract representation of conceptual units to provide smoother, more accurate translation between languages, even given neurological cross-species divergence
  • Provides for smooth HCI via operations on abstractions without requiring individualized parsing of sentences
    • Integrated portion of all Federation HCI since development, including vocal/text computer control and holographic entertainment technology
