Facts

  • Resistance movement spawned in aftermath of treaties between Federation and Cardassian Union forming the Demilitarized Zone, ceding colonies to Cardassian Union
  • Known membership numbers
    • 2371: numbered in the thousands (VOY: "Hunters")

History

  • Initial discontent began following attempted evacuation of Dorvan V (TNG: "Journey's End")
    • After refusal to evacuate, colony renounced Federation citizenship, agreed to government by Cardassian Union (TNG: "Journey's End")
  • Further colonies followed suit, under approval by both governments
  • Discontent increased over perceived abandonment by Federation, forcing colonists to agree to either evacuation or renouncement of citizenship (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")
    • Negative feelings fueled by Cardassian exploitation of treaty terms, secretly funneling weapons to Cardassian colonies in order to harass Federation colonies into further concession, surrender (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")
  • Following revelation of Cardassian tactics, Maquis officially formed mid-October 2370, comprised of coalition of colonists, allied civilians (including numerous Bajoran nationals), and Starfleet officers resigning commissions in favor of Maquis goals (DS9: "The Maquis", "Defiant"; TNG: "Preemptive Strike"; VOY: "Caretaker")
    • While the Maquis was officially classified by the Federation as a terrorist group, some member states of the Federation near the Demilitarized Zone offered covert sympathy and support to the Maquis, such as Ktaris (VOY: "The Voyager Conspiracy")
  • Upon onset of Klingon-Cardassian War 2372, Klingon Empire unofficially allied with Maquis, providing materiel (DS9: "Blaze of Glory")
  • Initial plans to declare status as independent nation following near-collapse of Cardassian Union were scuttled upon Union taking Dominion membership (DS9: "Blaze of Glory")
    • Maquis were decimated by Jem'Hadar attacks, all but destroyed with exception of Federation prisoners, surviving cell on USS Voyager (DS9: "Blaze of Glory"; VOY: "Hunters")
