- Almost immediately following establishment, Cardassian Central Command began efforts to secretly arm Cardassian colonists in order to expel Federation colonists from the region (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")

- DMZ continued to be a hotbed for both Maquis and Cardassian terrorist strikes over the following years
- After start of Klingon-Cardassian War, Cardassian forces largely diverted from DMZ, allowing flourishment of Maquis (DS9: "For the Cause")
- DMZ dissolved July 30, 2373, following admission of Cardassian Union to the Dominion and commencement of Dominion War (DS9: "By Inferno's Light")
